Thin The Seal Population?
This site has been started to accumulate information regarding the explosion of the seal population off the coasts of the USA and in particular Cape Cod. I have always been an animal lover as well as a very avid Striper fisherman most of my life. The poor fishing off the coast of Cape Cod for stripers for years in particular has raised many questions about the large seal population. Fishermen have grown to hate the smart cute furry mammals which at times actually steal fish from their lines. They are big eaters and surely dine regularly on stripers, bluefish, and all the other species available. Supposedly their main diet is the bait fish the other fish depend upon for their subsistence. They surely are not the only cause for the decline in the stripers off of the Cape, but they are a large contributing factor. The question comes up - Should we thin the seal population? Other mammals such as deer, bears, raccoons, etc. are legally thinned at times for the betterment of both the thinned species as well reducing problems caused by the targeted species. Mother Nature does not always keep things in balance. Sometimes we must help out. I welcome information and pictures regarding this topic both pros and cons. Please email Woo. 1/9/13 Since I had a stroke in the fall of 2010 I have not been able to spend time maintaining this site. With all the interest in sharks at Cape Cod I plan now to give the site more attention. I welcome any help in the way of pictures or articles. Happy New Year to all.
12/31/09 - Happy New Years to all. Is there a solution out there for the Seal problem?
9/9/09 There have been many news reports about white sharks off Cape Cod beaches. Some of the sharks have been tagged for research purposes. Many of the beaches have been closed to swimmers. See video and links sections for recent information. I will be following the shark/seal situation on my twitter at www.twitter.com/woofish.
